DC Central Kitchen: Truck Farm
This mini-garden in the back of a pick-up is planted with fresh produce and used as a tool to teach urban youth about healthy eating. In addition, the Truck Farm will be a part of the USDA farmers market every Friday as well as summer youth events hosted by the People’s Garden and Capital Area Food Bank. dcg assisted with the fundraising for and installation of the project.
The Truck Farm will:
- Give DC school kids a chance to “dig in”, teaching them how food grows and getting them excited about the fresh food in their school lunches.
- Plant and grow seasonal vegetables and fruit such as lettuce, carrots, strawberries and watermelon.
- Increase meal participation in DC Public Schools by getting children excited to be a part of the meal making process.
