1425 K Street NW

Downtown DC’s first green roof on a commercial building, this 3,500 sq. ft. installation is located 13 storeys above 1425 K Street.  The project brought together dc greenworks, Casey Trees, and Blake Real Estate and was a showcase intended to accelerate the adoption of green roof technology in the Nation’s Capital.  Several steps were required to prepare the roof for the 33,000 pounds of engineered soil, and 9,730 low-growing succulent plants comprised of 11 sedum species.  Plants were selected with a variety of color and texture.  dc greenworks was the technical lead, training young adults from Covenant House while co-organizing the installation at the Blake Real Estate owned building.  This green roof was awarded the Washington Business Journal’s “Best Real Estate Deals of 2004” winning in the category for Sustainable Growth & Environmental Impact.  It is funded by grants from the DC Department of Health and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
